Abstract:

This session explores varied strategies to support learner agency and how to make connections to self-reflection. It will demonstrate varied tools to assess learning that are formative as well as leading to critical analysis. Participants will leave with clear examples to adapt and utilize in their own classrooms and contexts.

About the Speaker:

Grazzia María Mendoza Chirinos is a Researcher at University of Wisconsin-Madison/WCER/WIDA where she develops complex research project for bi/multilingual programs and learners. She is a former Education Specialist at USAID Honduras where she managed and designed education projects to support the Ministry of Education to ensure access, quality of education and safe learning spaces.

She has been a language educator for 30 years, is a consultant and teacher trainer. She holds a M.Ed. in international education and a M.A. in TESOL. She has held a variety of positions in K-12 as well as Higher Education and trained teachers worldwide for 15 years. She is a US State Department Alumna recognized for project development for teachers’ professional growth and recognized by TESOL International Association for Scholarship and Service through the Virginia French Allen for Scholarship and Service and the Outstanding Advocate Awards in 2018 and 2023 respectively.

Her research interest includes CALL, CBLT and Methodological Improvements for Professional Development. She is the founder and former President HELTA TESOL in Honduras, former President of Latin America and Caribbean TESOL, and Past Member of TESOL International Association Board of Directors, where she served as Chair of the Finance Committee, in the working group to create the membership professional council, working group for staff performance evaluation, and working group for fundraising. She was also liaison for the EFL and BME interest sections and the Conferences Professional Council. She has held multiple leadership positions within TESOL including Chair of the EFLIS and Strand Coordinator for Proposal reviews and most recently CALL IS EVO Assistant Coordinator and Chair Elect-Elect for the TEIS.
